"Sado - The Guest". This is a Single Cask (#129/2013) bottling exclusively for Mizunara, Hong Kong. Bottled in November 2020 with 254 bottles released, this has been matured in a fresh bourbon barrel for nearly seven years and then finished in a Pedro Ximenez hogshead for over ten months. A Nose of citrus fruits and raisins and a Palate of mixed fruits, salted caramel and dry spice with peat smoke at the back end, the Finish is long with rich fruits, lots of spices like cloves and cardamom along with dry smoke. 

This bottling represents a continuation of the story of SADO, from Mizunara's previous Single Cask bottling (767/2011 label focusing on the HOST) and this time around focuses on the GUEST, both of whom share mutual respect during a Japanese Tea Ceremony ("SADO"). The label for both the bottles were designed by Kenro Shinchi, an artist based out of Koshikishima Island in Kagoshima, Japan.

Nose: Plums with gingerbread and hints of toffee Palate: Honey, quite oily with spices such as cloves and cinnamon Finish: Warming ginger spice, lingering coffee beans and marzipan.

Kilchoman 18 Year Old Ex-Bourbon from the 20th Anniversary Cask Series is the distillery’s oldest release, a vatting of five specially selected ex-bourbon casks. Distilled in 2006 (casks no. 33, 146, 149, 155, 163) with only 1,209 bottles release worldwide.

Tasting Note: Nose: Full-bodied with a strong cask influence after 18 years, offering rich butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel, along with hints of toasted oak. Palate: Robust, with sweet caramel and toffee fruits, balanced by a touch of peat smoke and subtle saltiness in the background. Finish: Long with lasting toffee and butterscotch, and a hint of maritime smoke that rounds off the finish. (From the Distillery)

A limited-edition “20th Anniversary Cask Series” release, selected by Founder Anthony Wills to celebrate 20 years of Kilchoman. This peated whisky matured in five first-fill ex-bourbon barrels for 14 years (Cask Nos. 403, 422, 498, 750 & 800 / 2010). Only a total of 1,120 bottles were released worldwide.

Tasting Note: Nose: Soft and full-bodied with rich caramel and toffee, complemented by hints of lemon zest and subtle peat smoke. Palate: Lush and smooth, with sweet toffee and vanilla, followed by lemon curd notes and a light, integrated peat smoke. Finish: Long and warming, with lingering honey sweetness and a crisp, smoky citrus finish. (From the Distillery)

The coastal Glenglassaugh distillery went silent in 1986 and reopened in 2008 and is now operated by Brown-Forman, owners of Jack Daniel’s.

First produced by James Logan Mackie in 1861 and taking its name from a famous Edinburgh inn, White Horse is a historic brand with Lagavulin one of its key components.  This bottle has been bottled exclusively for Japan Jardine Matheson & co., (Japan) Ltd. We estimate this to be a bottling from the late 1970s.

Given the date of the bottling, we expect a major component of this whisky to be Lagavulin.

Released in August 2012, this whisky has been matured in traditional oak whisky casks and then ‘finished’ in casks that previously held Caribbean rum. To create the ideal finish Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE filled American oak casks with his own blend of select West Indian rums and when he judged the casks to be ready, the rum was replaced with the aged spirit and the wood was put to work adding the final touches. The result is the traditional smooth, honeyed character of The Balvenie married with notes of toffee and a hint of fruit, with a warm, lingering finish.  Nose: Rich, sweet and creamy toffee on the nose combines with fresh fruit notes Palate: Rounded with vanilla and sweet oak notes, with a fruity character that develops with time Finish: Soft and lingering

This Longrow 18 years is a limited edtion, and reportedly a vatting of 60% matured in refill sherry casks and 40% in bourbon casks, bottled in 2017 with 4500 bottles released. 

Nose: sweet fruits, vanilla, oak with smoke and maritime notes Palate: very creamy and oily mouth feel with grapefruits, passion fruit, caramel and more red fruits Finish: wonderful balance of salty smoke and subtle sweetness of some dark fruits perhaps coming from the refill sherry cask with a dry and long finish.
