The core expression from the Yamazaki Distillery, this Distiller's Reserve showcases the balance between the various casks used in the vatting for this bottling including sherry casks and mizunara oak. The 1981 Kioke Shikomi is regarded to be largely Hakushu (label states Pure Malt) and reportedly bottled in 2005. The name implies "matured in wooden tubs".  The distillation technique seems to have involved the direct fire method and bamboo charcoal filteration. Discontinued in 1999. No box available.

This Yamazaki single malt is one of Yamazaki 2020 limited edition series released in Nov. 2020. The Puncheon Casks,  coopered by Suntory are larger than the usual ex-bourbon barrels sized at 480 litres and made of high quality American oak. Due to the larger size and hence low contact ratio of puncheons, the maturation is slower and brings about a complexity and richness which highlights the true flavours of the spirit itself.
