Mortlach

Founded in 1823, Mortlach was the first legal distillery in Dufftown, Speyside. George Cowie become the sole owner in 1867 and by 1896, his son Alexander joined the business and introduced the 2.81 distillation process. It defined this distillery via its rich, muscular and meaty whisky. While Mortlach is aged in a variety of casks , Mortlach’s weight makes it very suitable for ex-Sherry casks. In the past, there has been little stock available for single malt bottlings except for the occasional independent bottling (such as Gordon & MacPhail) and a 16 year old in Diageo’s Flora & Fauna series. That has changed since 2014.

Currently owned by Diageo, Mortlach has been a key component in several Johnnie Walker bottlings, while Diageo also markets four Mortlach single malts.
