This unique kentucky straight malt whiskey has a soft, sweet, nutty character. Unlike a typical 100% malt whiskey, this whiskey is crafted from 51% malt and aged in new charred oak barrels, making it similar to bourbon and provides a new experience for bourbon drinkers. Color: Warm Umber Nose: Soft nutty notes drizzled with light caramel and milk chocolate coat a layer of fruit character (apple, dried fruit, tropical fruit). Hints of brown spice, savory mint and brown sugar mingle with a rich note of freshly milled toasted oak Palate: Dark chocolate and caramel coated nuts are dried out with a dusting of cocoa powder and brown spice. Yamaga New Born 2022 is a first release new-make whisky from Yamaga Distillery in Kumamoto, Japan, created to mark the distillery’s first anniversary. Located in northern Kumamoto Prefecture, the distillery makes use of high-quality groundwater and the basin’s hot, humid climate, with the whisky blended from spirits aged in bourbon barrels.
Released on 1 December 2022, it was bottled at 58% ABV in a 375ml format, with 3,421 bottles produced. As a young new-born spirit rather than a fully matured single malt, it showcases distillery character and early promise more than age-driven complexity. It is a blend of seven selected casks matured for around 7 months in bourbon barrels. Whiskybase rate at around 86 points.
Tasting notes from distillery: Aromas of green apple and osmanthus, along with roasted nuts and elegant malt flavors, create a delicate yet robust body. Aroma: Butterscotch, milk caramel, apple pie, blackcurrant, mint. Flavors: Silky, osmanthus, sponge cake, cashews, lemon cake, camphor, meringue, mitarashi (sweet soy sauce glaze)

Whiskyfun gave this 90 points. Supreme Champion Spirit award at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) in 2025, SWSC Double Gold Medal in 2005, IWSC Trophy in 2006 and ISC Gold in 2007. This is bottled prior to 2018.
