The sixth batch of Single Malt whisky from Nagahama Distillery features a base of Mizunara oak-aged spirits. Besides showcasing the unique oriental character of Mizunara oak, it also emphasizes the balance between the woody aromas and other flavors.

Nagahama used two distinctly different Mizunara oak cask spirits in the blend:

-First Fill Mizunara oak spirit distilled in 2020, exhibiting strong woody and spicy aromas.
-Second Fill Mizunara oak spirit distilled in the same year, contributing fruity aromas of fresh orange and white peach.

To enrich the flavor profile, Nagahama also added spirits matured in bourbon and Islay Quarter Casks, giving the whisky a touch of sweet tartness and a subtle smokiness. A total of 3,968 bottles were bottled.

Nose:  Woody aroma of Japanese furniture, complemented by the tartness of citrus, the sweetness of toffee, and a light smoky note – quite pleasant. Palate: Medium-bodied, with fruity notes and a sweet-bitter caramel flavor behind the smokiness. Finish: Long smoky woody finish.

Nagahama released its first Single Malt, The First Batch, in 2022, followed by Second and Third batches. Entering 2024-2025, the series shows signs of accelerating, with this Fifth Batch released only about six months after the previous "Batch". This release is  approximately 3,000 bottles. 

Nagahama The Fifth Batch was distilled in 2020, aged for 2 years and 8 months in Islay Quarter Cask and the KOVAL distillery Casks of the US, and then further matured for 1 year in  Oloroso Sherry Hogshead.

Nose: Fruity notes of fresh orange and white peach, accompanied by the sweetness of apricot candy. Palate: The mid-palate unfolds with a warm sweetness reminiscent of honey cake and maple pancakes. Smooth with spicy notes of nutmeg and clove. Finish: Dry, elegant tannin from the sherry casks, lingering long after the first sip.

Nagahama Distillery has been operating since 2016. During this time, Nagahama has developed its World Blended series, "Amahagan," while also releasing single cask blends. After accumulating considerable experience, they launched their first Single Malt, "The First Batch," in 2022. The subsequent "The Second Batch," with its peaty style, was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, demonstrating that Nagahama has finally found its own path.

"The Third Batch" uses Mizunara oak, Islay quarter casks, bourbon casks, and Koval whisky casks. The spirits used are aged for 3-4 years and then bottled at 50% ABV. 

Nose: Smoky scent wafts from afar. The first aroma is a fresh malt scent. A deeper sniff reveals notes of raisins, dried apricots, and persimmons, mingled with hints of chocolate cookie, complemented by a moderate smokiness – quite pleasant! Palate: the beer is robust and smooth, with honey sweetness and malt notes intertwined, creating a pleasantly sweet and comforting flavor. Finish: The mid-to-late stages reveal peaty and smoky notes that linger on the palate.

Kilchoman Machir Bay Cask Strength 2025 is a limited-edition, higher-proof version of Machir Bay Islay single malt. It is bottled at full cask strength rather than the regular 46% ABV, designed to deliver more intense coastal peat smoke. 

Kilchoman Founder Anthony Wills wrote: “One of my favourite whiskies we have released, it has everything I love about Kilchoman spirit, with a little extra punch. There will be a lot of happy Kilchoman fans seeing the Machir Bay Cask Strength back on shelves.” 

Tasting Notes
Nose: The nose is bold and smoky, with sweet vanilla and caramel from the bourbon barrels, layered with citrus and tropical fruit, and hints of floral and mineral complexity.
Palate: On the palate, it is full-bodied and warming, with creamy malt sweetness balancing maritime peat smoke, fresh and candied citrus, toffee, and subtle spice.
Finish: This finish is long and lingering, with smoke gradually giving way to vanilla, toasted coconut, and a soft saline note. (From the Distillery)

This limited release has been matured for 13 years in a combination of bourbon barrels, octaves and calvados casks. It exudes an abundance of juicy fresh fruits, intense sweetness and waves of Islay maritime peat smoke.

According to the founder of Kilchoman, Anthony Wills “..... I’m excited to announce the release of another age statement Kilchoman: the 13-year-old.

The ex-Bourbon casks make up a large part of the vatting, lending that unmistakable Kilchoman character, while the addition of Calvados casks, which may surprise a few people, infuses vibrant green apple and fresh fruit notes into the mix."

Tasting Note: Nose: Fragrant and delicate with bursting notes of fresh pineapple, hibiscus and lemon sherbets. Tasting Note: Nose: Full-bodied with a strong cask influence after 18 years, offering rich butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel, along with hints of toasted oak. Palate: Robust, with sweet caramel and toffee fruits, balanced by a touch of peat smoke and subtle saltiness in the background. Tasting Note: Nose: Soft and full-bodied with rich caramel and toffee, complemented by hints of lemon zest and subtle peat smoke. Palate: Lush and smooth, with sweet toffee and vanilla, followed by lemon curd notes and a light, integrated peat smoke. The distillery started in 1994 was crowned the world’s best Single Malt, in 2014 as the first outside of Scotland or Japan to win “World’s Best Single Malt,” followed by “World’s Best Single Cask” triumphs in 2018 and 2019.

This exclusive bottling commemorates both Mizunara's 10th Anniversary and a two-decade friendship between Mr. Barry Eric Dick and Mizunara's founder (at US Investment bank Merrill Lynch), rooted in their shared appreciation for exceptional whisky. Barry's passion for Thor comics, sparked at the age of 10, and his later appreciation for fine whisky converge in this exceptional single cask bottling, titled very aptly "Whisky & Friends: The Best Pairing of All." 

On the nose, expect ripe pineapple and greengage with baked pastry notes. The palate delivers full body and silky texture with figs in syrup, candied fruits, and malt, while the finish gracefully unfolds with liquorice, shortbread, and citrus. THE HACHI SHOCHU, Kome (Rice), Cask Matured is a collaboration with Fukano Shuzo, which was founded in 1823 by Tokiji Fukano and is located at Hitoyoshi city in Kumamoto. This Kome Shochu comprises a vatting of about 75% of Kome Shochu A, a traditional unmatured Kome Shochu and 25% of Kome Shochu B, cask matured (for about 3.5 years in an Ex-Bourbon Cask) to create a perfect balance between the traditional KUMA Shochu with a hint of additional layers of complexity from the cask maturation. The unmatured traditional Kome Shochu A has been produced using premium Japanese rice (with a polishing ratio of about 90%), Shiro Koji (White Koji) and Sake Ginjo Yeast at low-temperature fermentation followed by single distillation under vacuum pressure to retain the flavours of the underlying ingredient Kome (Rice). The cask matured component has been produced with Ki Koji (Yellow Koji), Sake Ginjo Yeast and vacuum distillation. Come and enjoy this special bottling with Hacchan. Kanpai!

Color: Gold Nose: A fruity aroma of freshly cooked Japanese rice, mochi cream, fresh green apples, sparkling grapes, honeycomb and a hint of pencil shavings. Palate: Initial sweetness with fresh vanilla and honey reminding us of the oak maturation followed by rice mochi, some fresh apples, plums, apricots and oak spice sweetness at the finish. The flavours of Kome (Rice) come through in the mid palate along with the additional layers from cask maturation.

This 2026 Single Malt limited edition is crafted from a generous selection of key malts, featuring whisky aged in bourbon barrels and finished in apple brandy casks, alongside spirit matured in re-charred ex-shochu casks and finished in white wine casks.

Additional layers of complexity are introduced through sherry casks and a subtle hint of peated whisky, all refined through a slow dilution process to achieve a mellow, rounded depth.

The whisky opens with gentle floral aromas. On the palate, it reveals a soft sweetness reminiscent of yuzu bean paste, followed by a long, soothing finish with lingering notes of grapefruit and a touch of sea breeze.

Akkeshi Single Malt Japanese Whisky “Shousho” (小暑), meaning “minor heat,” is the 16th edition in the Nijushisekki (Twenty-Four Solar Terms) series from Hokkaido’s Akkeshi Distillery.  A limited release primarily draws primarily from Hokkaido-grown malted barley, with masterful maturation in local Mizunara oak casks complemented by ex-bourbon and sherry influences.
