單一麥芽威士忌和混合威士忌

威士忌（Whisky）一詞源自於蓋爾語“uisge beatha”或“usquebaugh”，意為“生命之水”。蓋爾語屬於凱爾特語系，在蘇格蘭高地使用。

雖然威士忌在蘇格蘭的蒸餾歷史很長，但有證據表明蒸餾技術本身是由基督教傳教士帶到這個國家的。

然而，最早關於威士忌的歷史記載出現在1494年左右的蘇格蘭國庫卷中，其中有一條記錄：「八蒲式耳麥芽獻給修士約翰·科爾，用於製作aquavitae（生命之水）。」一蒲式耳是古老的蘇格蘭計量單位，重量不超過六蒲式耳。 （一蒲式耳相當於25.4公斤）
