シングルモルトウイスキーとブレンデッドウイスキー

ウイスキーは、ゲール語の「uisge beatha」（または「usquebaugh」）に由来し、「生命の水」を意味します。ゲール語はケルト語族に属し、スコットランドのハイランド地方で話されています。

スコットランドでは古くからウイスキーの蒸留が行われてきましたが、蒸留そのものはキリスト教の宣教師によってこの国にもたらされたことを示す証拠がいくつかあります。

しかし、ウイスキーに関する最も古い歴史的記録は、1494年頃のスコットランド国庫記録簿に記されています。そこには「ジョン・コー修道士に8ボルの麦芽を渡し、アクアヴィタ（生命の水）を造らせた」という記述があります。1ボルはスコットランドの古い計量単位で、6ブッシェル以下でした。（1ブッシェルは25.4キログラムに相当します。）
