JUO (Barley i.e. Mugi) Shochu, the flagship bottling from Miroku Shuzo (a family owned craft distillery located in Oita Prefecture, Japan) uses locally grown barley in the cities of Kitsuki & Usa (both near the distillery itself). Single Distilled under normal atmospheric pressure, makes it a Honkaku Shochu retaining the flavours of the underling ingredient.
JUO Barley Shochu offers a smooth yet very balanced flavours with cereal and malty notes reminding us of fresh dough as if you were in a bakery combined with hints of pear and dark chocolate at the finish. Perfect as a Shochu Highball, it pairs particularly well with some sea food and Tempura.
Originally founded on the site of a remodeled/old rice warehouse (belonging to the local agricultural cooperative) with the support of the Oita Prefecture the distillery has been focused on using local agricultural products as raw materials and revitalizing the region by creating employment.
