ニッカウヰスキーの2つのユニークな蒸留所：余市と宮城峡

余市蒸溜所は、スコットランドで初めてウイスキー造りを極めた日本人、竹鶴政孝によって1934年に設立されました。政孝は、北方の気候と風土を重んじました。政孝が選んだ余市は海に近く、三方を山に囲まれ、スコットランドのハイランド地方に似た地形を多く備えていました。政孝は余市蒸溜所の建設にあたり、石炭を直火で焚くポットスチルを導入しました。この伝統的な石炭焚き蒸溜は、温度管理が難しく、熟練の職人技が必要となるため、現在ではほとんど見られません。余市シングルモルトの特徴である、力強いコクと香ばしい焦げた風味は、この蒸溜所ならではのものです。

宮城峡蒸溜所は1969年に設立されました。政孝は北の山々に囲まれ、清らかな二つの川が合流する美しい霧深い渓谷に出会いました。その川の水を飲んだ瞬間（現在の水源となっています）、彼は深く感銘を受け、すぐにこの地に蒸溜所を建設することを決意しました。この異なるテロワールに加え、宮城峡蒸溜所独自の蒸溜方法が、独特のモルトウイスキーを生み出しています。政孝は余市とは異なる技術を用い、この独自の蒸溜方法によって、宮城峡シングルモルトは柔らかでフローラルな風味を醸し出しています。

Fresh citrus and stewed fruits. Very crisp, fresh and enjoyable and a great entry to the aged whiskies from this distillery located in Sendai in Northern Japan. Sadly discontinued and a rarity. This bottling (estimated from around 2000s) label spells "Miyagikyou" on its label and is an earlier version of the 10 Year Old bottling with "Miyagikyo" on its label.
