The US*1 expressions are so named to honor Michter’s heritage as America’s first whiskey company. Given the unique grain selection, this expression cannot be categorized as either a Bourbon or a Rye Whiskey and the name "Sour Mash" originates from the original process of making Whiskey wherein some of the previously fermented mash is used as a starter for the next batch of mash being fermented (similar to sourdough). Very popular in the 1970s and 1980s, this expression disappeared from the market before making a return in 2012. Warm toasted burnt sugar notes with spice, sweey smoky fruit, candied and honeyed vanilla. Starts out like a bourbon and finishes like a rye (Tasting Notes from Producer).
